Almost every scaffolding incident traces back to something that would have been caught by a two-minute walk-round. Print this, pin it at the access point, and use it.
The daily check — before first use each day
- Foundations. Base plates and sole boards still bearing evenly? Ground not softened by rain or undermined by excavation?
- Plumb. Any visible lean or bulge in the elevation?
- Bracing. All diagonals present? Anything removed overnight to move material?
- Ties. All ties in place and tight? Any loosened to get a window or panel through?
- Connections. Cups seated and locked, couplers tight, spigots pinned where required.
- Decking. Platform fully boarded, boards not lifting, no gaps at the edges.
- Edge protection. Guardrails and toe boards present at every working level.
- Access. Ladder tied, extending above platform, landing area clear.
- Loading. No material stacked beyond the platform's rated load, nothing stored against guardrails.
- Housekeeping. Platform clear of offcuts, spilled mortar and trip hazards.
Additional checks after specific events
- After heavy rain or high wind — re-check foundations, ties and any sheeting. Sheeted scaffolds catch wind like a sail.
- After any modification — full re-inspection before the platform is used again.
- After a vehicle strike or dropped load — inspect the affected bays and the two either side.
- Weekly, regardless — a full inspection of the whole structure, recorded.
Stop work immediately if you see
- A vertical no longer bearing on its base plate
- A bent, cracked or visibly deformed member carrying load
- Missing ties on a structure above its free-standing height limit
- Movement or noise from the structure under normal use
- Decking that deflects noticeably underfoot
Nobody has ever regretted stopping work on a scaffold for twenty minutes. Plenty of sites have regretted the alternative.
What we do on our side
Material is inspected before it leaves our yard — bent, cracked or heavily corroded components are pulled from the fleet rather than sent out. On site we found on sole boards, brace and tie progressively, deck fully, fit edge protection, and inspect the completed structure before handover. If you need a mid-project inspection or a modification, call us; that is part of the service.
